Teachers at RISE Academy for Adult Achievement began the first quarter of the 2016-2017 school year engaged in professional learning focused on the use of common literacy strategies. This year the school is focused on regularly engaging students in rich and rigorous evidence-based discussion on substantive topics. To support this work, teachers began Thursday's session by exploring common literacy tools - the RISE Annotation Guide, argumentative writing stems, and writing rubrics ( argumentative and informational ). Participants then then worked with the article "The Myth of the Culture of Poverty" by Paul Gorksi and engaged in two discussion strategies - Save the Last Word and Question Quads. Materials from the session are linked below. Presentation deck Save the Last Word Question Quads "The Myth of the Culture of Poverty"
